Don’t stick with the old when it comes to food labelling

Food product labelling

Worldwide, there has been a sharp rise in consumer demand in many commodity-driven industries due to the availability of a wider range of products online and in stores.

One sector that has seen an upward trend in demand is fresh food produce. Consumers are increasingly focused on the quality, value and production history of the food they consume. As a result, food and packaging manufacturers now, more than ever, need to meet this increase in demand and find new and safe ways to improve shortening process cycles, while adhering to regulatory standards.

A segment of the food produce market that has an exceptionally high turnover of goods is fruit and vegetables. This is due to many products having a short shelf life, with items often required to be replaced weekly or even daily. To keep up with consumer demand, it is important for manufacturers to use high-quality packaging and labelling solutions that are easy to use, enable fast delivery and comply with national and international health and safety standards.

Adhesive used in fruit and vegetable label are classified into either direct or indirect food additives and these labels need to meet specific food-grade regulations and requirements.

Labels are an essential and unavoidable means of conveying valuable information to consumers about a product. They must be designed to appear on even the smallest of surfaces. For many fresh fruits and vegetables, labelling and packaging must be in direct contact with the products. For example, in many countries, a label can often be found on each individual banana sold in the market.

Food safety, along with a wide range of other specifications, has to be taken into consideration when manufacturers are packaging and using high-performance adhesives for different product ranges.  Label manufacturers need to ensure that the labels they use do not fall off, have a well-balanced initial tack and peel, and most importantly, are compliant with regulations.

Finding the right adhesive

To ensure that products meet safety requirements, packaging and food manufacturers have to consider applying label adhesives that will maintain a high degree of efficiency during the life cycle of each individual item.

Some important elements associated with conventional food labelling adhesives include:

  • The temperature range of each food label will vary depending on how the product needs to be stored and transported. The label may be exposed to low or semi-freezing temperatures.

  • Ensuring the label adhesive will not alter the food in any way including taste, smell, quality or safety of the product.

  • Ensuring labels remain on products during transportation, do not curl or cause haloing.

  • Ensuring labels provide the correct information, and that labels and adhesives meet local regulatory food grade requirements

When selecting an adhesive, it is also crucial to consider the most appropriate material to save time and money during short process cycles.

Food safety is of top priority

Bostik develops, manufactures and distributes adhesives and sealants for construction, industrial and consumer markets. The recently launched Bostik Food Touch H18, which is a new series of hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives (HMPSAs) to be used in direct food contact labelling has many benefits and a range of key performance properties including:

  • A wide application temperature range that will perform well in semi-freezing temperatures to room temperature

  • Resistance to fruit essence

  • No residue when removed from the product

  • Secure label placement even during long distance transport and no curling

  • Improved converting and die-cut performance using linerless labels that result in lighter labels

  • Minimal to no haloing on the product, or curling

We live in a world where demand for fresh food products is high and growing. This means that it is increasingly important for brands to constantly evolve their processes and materials to meet labelling and packaging requirements. At Bostik, we remain dedicated to using high-performance adhesives labelling and applying our knowledge and expertise to provide the best quality adhesives for our customers.
