Top things to look out for when choosing your tyre labels

You probably already know the three key things a tyre label informs users of: (1) fuel efficiency, (2) noise level, and (3) wet braking performance. This information is vital to informing and convincing consumers what tyre to buy.

Why you need a good tyre label

A poorly - made tyre label can have a snowball effect - if the label comes off or the information becomes illegible, consumers will have a harder time making efficient decisions, ultimately impacting endpoint sales.

What goes into a good tyre label?

How can manufacturers such as yourself ensure you’ve got the right product for your business? The end goal is simple:a tyre label that won’t come off until you want it to.

But let’s start from the beginning.

Your fresh batch of tyres has just came hot off the moulding line – the final step is sticking that label on. The last thing you want is an industrial adhesive that gets super hot and then turns crumbly. Or worse, singes the entire label off!

Bostik’s unique, patented hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive (HMPSA) solutions are specially engineered to maintain consistent, high-level performance, regardless of how hot your tyres are when the labels are stuck on.

This increases the efficiency of your processes by omitting the need for cooling time. More importantly, it significantly reduces the chances of ending up with indecipherable and ruined labels.

Sticking a flat piece of plastic on a ridged and curved surface like a tyre is always going to be a pain. Not using the right adhesive will make that process even worse.

The adhesive products we engineer to be compatible with vehicle tire labels are formulated to provide exceptional grip and a tenacious bond. Not only that, but their polyvalent properties provide exceptional long term adhesion and gap-fill over all kinds of irregular surfaces and face materials.

This ensures that the labels go on easily, and stay on for a long time – which is crucial in a time of extended delivery durations and decreased demand for automobiles.

Some other considerations

Ink & Humidity

As climate change worsens, the levels of humidity are expected to rise in the coming years throughout Asia.

This presents two problems:

  1. The initial adhesion

  2. The continued and lasting adhesion

To address the first issue, humid weather (heat and moisture) makes it difficult to affix some labels to surfaces. But this may not be an issue if the tyre labels aren’t being adhered in Asia, where humidity continues to climb.

However, the longevity of adhesion is still at stake when tyre labels are pasted on tyres that sit and soak in the muggy air in Asia. The last thing retailers want is damaged labels that are curling and/or peeling.

One might argue that that’s an issue that extends beyond the adhesive - a label without the right kind of ink will fade and crumble in the right conditions. You’re right. You should be using a label printed with a humidity-resistant UV-curable dielectric ink.

Not only does this mean your ink will be able to withstand long hours under the sun’s UV rays, but it also means you can use a UV-curable industrial adhesive, which typically forms fast, strong chemical bonds between substrates.

Here’s how Bostik can help

As we are constantly innovating in the field of industrial adhesives, our products are developed to meet your business needs. With solutions such as our ThermoGrip® line – that can be applied by a roll coater or slot die nozzle, at temperatures ranging 140-170°C  – our industrial adhesives ensure that end-users will be able to gather the information needed to close the deal.

In particular, ThermoGrip® H2549C is crafted for Asia’s weather conditions (i.e., climate, humidity, UV exposure, etc.) and suitable for high-speed, die-cutting, leaving no residue behind. Compatible to a wide range of face materials such as paper, PET, and other flexible labels, this solution can be used for permanent labels or specialities, especially tyre labels and other applications that require very aggressive pressure sensitive adhesion.

Bostik is also committed to ensuring profit doesn’t come at the cost of sustainability. Our Hot Melt Pressure Sensitive technology allows manufacturers to create production processes that are more environmentally friendly. HMPSAs possess superior tack and peel properties without using organic solvents and eliminate the need for a drying process.

It’s important that your tyres – with the labels attached – survive their shelf life in warm and wet Asia. It’s even more important that you can rest easy knowing this is guaranteed, without causing any harm to our environment.
